The following guidance should be read in conjunction with the University’s Maternity Leave Policy and Procedure.

  • Thorough planning in preparation for maternity leave will help to ensure that both the staff member and their manager have the necessary arrangements in place to support both needs during this period.

FamilyContractual Entitlements

The staff member on maternity leave is entitled to receive all contractual benefit, with the exception of their salary.

FamilyAltering the maternity leave

If it is necessary to amend the maternity leave dates whilst on maternity leave, please refer to sections 7 and 15 of the University’s Maternity Leave Procedure.

FamilyContact During Family Leave

Making advance arrangements for contact during family leave can be very beneficial.

It is important that contact arrangements, which may include up to 10 Keeping-In-Touch (KIT) days, are in place in advance of the leave, to ensure reasonable contact between the staff member and the University during the period of leave.

FamilyPension Contributions

Pension contribution arrangements will remain as normal during periods of maternity leave at full pay. However, it is important to consider the pension implications during periods of half pay, statutory pay (SMP) and nil pay.
