The following guidance should be read in conjunction with the University’s Maternity Leave Policy and Procedure.

  • It is beneficial to both the staff member and their manager to start planning for maternity leave as early as possible.

The information and guidance below is provided to assist with the planning process.

FamilyAccrual Annual Leave

Annual leave will be accrued during the whole period of maternity leave. The staff member and their manager can plan annual leave flexibly around the maternity period.

FamilyContact During Family Leave

Making advance arrangements for contact during family leave can be very beneficial.

It is important that contact arrangements, which may include up to 10 Keeping-In-Touch (KIT) days, are in place in advance of the leave, to ensure reasonable contact between the staff member and the University during the period of leave.

FamilyPension Contributions

Pension contribution arrangements will remain as normal during periods of maternity leave at full pay. However, it is important to consider the pension implications during periods of half pay, statutory pay (SMP) and nil pay.

Members of staff are advised to contact the Pensions Team to discuss their pension position.

FamilyExternal Funding & FTCs

Guidance on planning for either maternity, adoption or paternity leave for staff who are funded externally or on fixed term contracts.

FamilySickness Absence

If a member of staff is ill during pregnancy, they will receive their normal contractual sick pay, providing their maternity leave has not yet begun (and this can be started automatically in some cases).
