The Sheffield Leader Community
The Sheffield Leader Community is the development of networks that support and encourage leaders to do their jobs as effectively as possible, developing their potential and facilitating their involvement in wider university projects. Most importantly it is a community of leaders irrespective of level and role in the University - building on the principles of:
'Me, We and Us' and 'Leadership Everywhere'.
Community Events in 2017/18
Sheffield Leader Celebration Event - 4th July 2018
As part of our Celebration Event, colleagues kindly shared their most outstanding moments from attending Sheffield Leader together with how they felt it impacted on their own development.
Conversations with a Leader - Professor Mike Siva-Jothy - 14th June 2018
For the last in our 'Conversations with a Leader' series, we were very pleased to have Professor Mike Siva-Jothy, Head of the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, join us to share his leadership journey and generate discussion. Mike was one of the original Sheffield Leaders, having completed the very first Sheffield Leader 4 cohort in 2010, and subsequently returned to share his insight as a guest speaker to later Sheffield Leader cohorts.
Conversations with a Leader - Lucy Nickson - 14th March 2018
The second in our 'Conversations with a Leader' series featured Lucy Nickson, honorary graduate of the University at a recent winter ceremony. Lucy has transformed the care of terminally ill people through her contributions as the Chief Executive of two end-of-life support organisations in North Derbyshire. Lucy kindly shared her leadership learning along her journey and opened up discussion with colleagues about what affects leadership and recognising leadership qualities.
Strategic Partners - 6th February 2018
Our first event in the 'Our Plan' series, in which we learned about why partnership working is important for us all to consider. We also spent time discussing the principles behind building strong partnerships and heard about a specific case study of an important partnership for the University (with Siemens) which has resulted in the MindSphere Lounge, located in The Diamond building.
Conversations with a Leader - Dr Chris Stokes and Farzana Latif - 24th November 2017
The first in a series of three 'Conversations with a Leader' in this academic year, Chris and Farzana shared their leadership learning from both the highs and lows of leading a variety of University communities and complex projects. Attendees discussed the change curve, how to pitch your project in 14 seconds ('The Paternoster Pitch!) and the importance of sharing successes.
The annual Sheffield Leader Showcase took place in Firth Hall on 18th October 2017, with presentations from recent Sheffield Leader 4 Strategic Impact Groups and Sheffield Leader 3 Impact Groups. The exhibition area gave guests the chance to see further Impact Group projects and register interest in the Sheffield Leader Book Club and the brand new Sheffield Leader Think Tank. If you would like to know more about any of the group projects or Sheffield Leader features, feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Inclusive Leader - 29th June 2017
The final session in our Sheffield Leader behaviours series - opened by Professor Dave Petley (Vice-President for Research & Innovation) and facilitated by Dr Kathryn Page (T-Three Group) we took a fascinated look at research into the importance of leading inclusively - the science behind it and what it means in practice.
Dr Page's slides from the event are available on the Google Site.
The Imaginative Leader - 5th April 2017
Continuing our series on the Sheffield Leader behaviours, this event looked at imaginative leadership taking place across our organisation. Professor Dame Pamela Shaw provided fascinating insights into our primary case study of the day - the Sheffield Scanner project, followed by further stories from behind the scenes of this groundbreaking project from Michelle Moore and Emma Davey from DARE. In the second half of the event, we were joined by colleagues from across the University who have been role models of imaginative leadership on smaller scale projects. Overall it was an inspiring insight into the brilliant work going on in our organisation and how we can further contribute to it.
The Courageous Leader - 13th February 2017
The event was introduced by the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West and facilitated by Graham Johnson, an experienced Sheffield Leader facilitator and found partner of The Leaderful Partnership.
Professor West's introduction covered the challenges facing both the University and the HE sector in general, as well as what University Leaders can do to help to overcome these challenges. Graham then engaged the audience using the example of David Hempleman-Adams' walk to the North Pole to reflect on how change can affect us and how we can respond to change.
You can find further details from the event in this folder.
