Welcome to your position as a senior leader within the University of Sheffield

This Guide has been developed to support new Heads of Department to feel effective in their role and to feel supported as quickly as possible, with appropriate signposts for further information and support.

The Guide is intended to do two things:

  1. Support your early orientation into role, whether you’re an internal or external appointee, in order to ensure your smooth integration into role; and to act as a key point of reference not just early in your term, but also beyond.
  2. Provide quick access to key policies, guidance and best practice. Where appropriate each section will have references and links to other helpful documents or information.

It is not intended to replace or replicate general induction processes or guides, but brings relevant information into one accessible area, as well as complementing and supplementing it. Therefore you should use this guide alongside other interventions and materials that support your integration into your new role.
