2017/18 Pay Negotiations

Latest News

The 2017-18 national pay negotiations have now been concluded with four of the five HE Trade Unions (UCU, Unite, GMB and UNISON) confirming acceptance of the final offer (outlined below) with effect from 1 August 2017.  The University will therefore be implementing the pay award in August payroll.  The uplifted salary scales can be found on these pages under 'Salary Scales'.

All five Trade Unions submitted their joint pay claim on 22 March.  This was followed by three negotiating meetings between the five trade unions and the body representing HE employers (UCEA) which took place in March and April.  At the third meeting, the employers made a final offer of 1.7% on all spine points, with 2.4% on the lowest point and consequent extra loading for the first 16 spine points.  This equates to an hourly rate on the bottom spine point of £8.45 based on a 35 hour week (our lowest hourly rate is currently £8.24).

Having consulted their members, UNISON, GMB, UCU and Unite have agreed to accept the final pay offer outlined above. EIS are still to confirm their position.

The pay award compares favourably with pay awards elsewhere, especially when combined with incremental progression, and brings our lower pay rate in line with the current voluntary living wage foundation rate, and well above the government's National Living Wage rate. The national pay award is just one component of our reward package. Our total reward offer (The Deal) includes opportunities for accelerated pay progression for exceptional contribution, recognition awards for all staff, and a wide range of other benefits and offers. Full details of which can be found at The Deal.
