HCS6112 Interventions with Cleft Palate Speech (15 credits)

Introduction

This unit focuses on interventions to limit the impact of mechanical constraints such as a history of cleft palate, on speech development and to resolve child speech difficulties thought to have a mechanical and/or a perceptual aetiology. Articulatory and phonological approaches are introduced and contextualised within a psycholinguistic framework. Evidence for efficacy of different approaches is examined. Parent and child’s perception of their speech, and of intervention are explored. The course fosters awareness of specialist and community SLTs role within a wider MDT team from birth to adulthood with reference to issues of service delivery, ethics and clinical governance both in the UK and internationally.

Suitable for

Speech and language therapists and other professionals with a special interest in children with cleft palate.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to:

  • Describe the principles of phonetic, phonological and psycholinguistic therapy approaches for individuals with cleft palate and other complex speech difficulties;
  • Develop a theoretically principled therapy plan for a range of case examples taking into account all other influences on speech;
  • Summarize the ‘patient perspective’ and relevant ethical issues at all ages and stages of speech related intervention;
  • Discuss issues relating to the national context of service provision and their impact on care for individual with a history of cleft palate;
  • Evaluate key issues of ethics and clinical governance which apply to the care of an individual with a cleft.

Teaching Methods

The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email.

Online learning will be supplemented by an optional 2-3 day study block in Sheffield.

Timetable

The module starts in February of each year. The module runs over a period of 12 weeks, and this 15 credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the assignment). See timetable for the year. See timetable for the year.

Assessment

A 3,000 word assignment.
