HCS 275 Speech, Language and Communication Development (15 credits)
This module considers speech, language and communication from the perspective of linguistics,
including speech sounds, grammar, meaning and social use. It presents development of these
skills in typically-developing children from birth to adolescence. Students also develop skills in the
analysis of children’s language.
Learning Support and Teaching Assistants, Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, Nursery
Nurses and others working in a support role with children with Special Educational Needs.
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
- Outline the process of speech, language and communication development in typical development
- Be familiar with terminology and models developed by linguists and phoneticians
- Describe current theories in language development
- Carry out a basic analysis of language in terms of form, content and use.
The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online
reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors
via online discussion boards and email.
Online learning will be supplemented by an optional 1 day study block in Sheffield.
The module starts in January of each year. The module runs over a period of 12 weeks, and
this 15 credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the
