HCS 280 Working with Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (15 credits)

Introduction

This module builds on knowledge about the typical development of speech, language and communication and descriptions of children with SLCN. It promotes application of this to working with children with SLCN. It discusses the role of spoken language in learning and the range of skills that underpin the educational progress of children of all ages. It explores the facilitation of language learning and language teaching. It includes discussion of the critical processes involved in learning, and an outline of the key processes of teaching and classroom management.

Suitable for

Learning Support and Teaching Assistants, Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, Nursery Nurses and others working in a support role with children with Special Educational Needs.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate an informed understanding of the impact of speech, language and communication needs on learning
  • Reflect on the implications of newly acquired knowledge for teaching and learning
  • Identify a range of intervention strategies for promoting speech, language, communication and literacy.
  • Identify a range of strategies for promoting learning in children with speech, language and communication needs.
  • Apply new knowledge and skills to their practice
  • Discuss and share work experiences in relation to these topics
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals in their work context.

Teaching Methods

The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email.

Timetable

The module starts in June of each year. The module runs over a period of 12 weeks, and this 15 credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the assignment). See timetable for the year. (Link to timetable page)

Assessment

A 3,000 word assignment.
