Rising Star in Cardiovascular Research
Congratulations to Marwa Mahmoud (3rd year PhD student in the Department of Cardiovascular Science) who won the Young Investigator Prize at the 10th International Symposium on Biomechanics in Vascular Biology and Cardiovascular Disease which was held in Rotterdam in April 2015.
The symposium showcases a variety of interdisciplinary work and state of the art techniques with the aim to successfully bridge the gap between biomechanics, vascular biology and clinical research.
It is well established that disease development in the vasculature correlates with the presence of disturbed blood flow patterns. Marwa's research has shown for the first time that blood flow patterns at disease prone sites in arteries activate Twist1 and Gata4, transcription factors which promote endothelial dysfunction. The study provides a new mechanism to explain why disease occurs at disturbed flow sites and could lead to the development of new targets to prevent of treat atherosclerosis.
Marwa commented “It was a very interesting conference, I have found getting feedback on my work very useful. I was very pleased to have been selected to present my work but I am honoured they have awarded me the Young Investigator Prize”.
