The Big Walk raises £86,000 for lung disease research

Last September Sheffield alumni, staff and students helped raise a fantastic £86,000 in support of The Big Walk for lung disease research, from over 2,400 individual donations.

The University has been blown away by the amazing support that has been show to all the walkers who trekked from the Scottish Borders, all the way down the Pennine Way, and back to Sheffield. Not forgetting all those who joined the Big Walk team, over 100 staff, family and friends, for the final day’s walk from Edale to Sheffield.

Further fundraising also came in the form of bake sales, a quiz run by the University Library, and from last year’s University Christmas card. The card featured a commissioned piece of artwork depicting the new Diamond building, and all those who donated over the festive period were entered into a competition to win the original print, the winner of which we will be contacting shortly.

With the physical exertion of the walk out of the way the hard work of research now begins. The £86,000 raised has been transferred to the University’s Pulmonary Vascular Research Group, which is headed by Dr Allan Lawrie, one of the team who walked all 286 miles of the challenge. Allan and his team are eager to continue advancing their research to improve the lives of patients suffering from lung diseases, but Allan is also working hard to secure match funding which will allow the money raised to go even further.

I’m humbled by the effort that everyone has put into fundraising and spreading the word, not just the walkers, but also the people behind the scenes, particularly Dave Meadows and especially the Big Walkers and One Day Challenge walkers. The fact that the University backed this event, and chose my research as the focus for the event, is amazing.
