Biography:

I graduated from the University of Leeds with a first class BSc in Biochemistry and MB ChB with honours. I was a Wellcome Research Fellow on the professorial Medical Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and gained an MD in Hormonal Control of Coagulation and fibrinolysis. I trained in Haematology at the University of Sheffield and was appointed Consultant Haematologist and Director of the Arthur Bloom Comprehensive Care Haemophilia Centre at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in 1995. Two years later I returned to the University of Sheffield as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Haematologist where I combine an interest in Haemostasis with roles in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education.

Research Interests:

My research activities are in the areas of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and in particular new factor VIII concentrates, von Willebrand disease, the genetic basis of arterial and thrombotic events, antiphospholipid syndrome and heparin induced thrombocytopenia.

Teaching Interests:

I have a major interest and commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. I am Director of Studies for phase 3b and phase 4 of the undergraduate medical course and lead on the final examination. I examine at all levels of the undergraduate and dental courses and am involved in Biomedical Scientist training. I am responsible for delivery of the Foundation curriculum within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and am the Training Programme Director for Haematology in South Yorkshire, being a member of the Deanery Foundation School and General Internal Medicine School. I am Deputy Director of Medical Education for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and I am teaching lead within the Department of Cardiovascular Science.
