MPH Masters in Public Health

Winner of the Common Wealth Scholarship 2014

I pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Zambia before coming to Sheffield and I am currently working as a District Health Planning Officer in my country. I am responsible for coordinating health programmes and ensuring that the strategic health plan is adhered to.

I chose the University of Sheffield because it is a world-leading university with an international reputation for research excellence across a wide range of disciplines. The research produced at Sheffield is of international significance. University supervisors and tutors are at the leading edge of their fields, constantly pushing the boundaries of current challenges faced in the world today.

I am very excited to be awarded the common-wealth prestigious scholarship to study at the University of Sheffield. This is the ultimate factor that brought me to England.

The most enjoyable thing about pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public health at the University of Sheffield is that, the programme has equipped me with advanced knowledge in public health research methods. This has given me the ability to design and implement evidence based public health interventions in order to curb high maternal and child mortality in my district through improved access to quality and equitable health care. Secondly, the programme has enabled me understand how policies and programmes are best designed, analysed, implemented, and evaluated. This has enhanced my understanding of the roles planners should play in strategic health management based on equity and efficiency considerations.

The teaching at Sheffield is very good as information flows from the lecturer to the student providing a broad introduction to the subject matter and further inquiry. Tutorials and seminars also provide a basis of an in- depth analysis, promoting an exchange of ideas among people with different backgrounds and experiences.

The University of Sheffield is a prestigious institution, one of the elite Russell Group Universities. A Masters Degree from Sheffield counts a lot in the job market.Sheffield is a city of stunning landscapes rich in culture and history with a modern outlook. If one is interested in culture or just having fun, there is nowhere better to live than in Sheffield.

I intend to go back to Zambia and continue working in my district upon completion of my studies to use the knowledge and skills to help my district in prioritising health problems and designing public health interventions that are more cost effective. I wish to pursue my public health course even further by enrolling in PhD studies thereafter.

For people coming from places like my country (Zambia), I would recommend shopping warm clothes to counter the cold weather in Sheffield. Taking part in the meet and greet (intro-week) is another thing I would recommend as this is the only opportunity to meet and make new friends.
