Sheffield students on...volunteering

Andrei, Romania

I believe that for every work there needs to be a form of honest payment. And you get that here, in Sheffield. Not money, no. Here, if you work for what you believe in, you manage to get something more valuable: character. Volunteering here is not only about saving the rainforest, but it is about making things better, for you, and for others. And trust me, in today's world, people with character are in a very short supply.

Volunteering is one of the ways I also managed to make good friends, there are so many fun opportunities and it really feels rewarding at the end. At University you also get recognition for the little things you do help those in need.

I have been part of AIESEC who are an amazing youth led organization that manages internships and volunteer opportunities across the world, and puts on weekly workshops and development for their members to increase their employability and skills.

Catalina, MA Leadership and Management, Romania

I haven't been able to volunteer as much as I would've liked to - there are so many opportunities and causes to help and support. I was briefly involved with the Oxfam Society but unfortunately I was unable to continue doing that because of my schedule. Anyone interested in global issues should definitely look into the work they're doing.

I have volunteered several times through the University volunteering service and basketball club. It has been very easy to volunteer and the variety of volunteering opportunities is impressive. I have volunteered in a school and during a sports taster session day for disabled children. Both experiences allowed me to combine basketball and teaching children towards a positive impact in the community. I enjoy seeing the kids learn something new, build up their confidence and have a good time by participating in sports.

Elina, BA Business Management, Finland

I am member of Equality Hub Network at Sheffield's City Council. There plenty of opportunities to do volunteer work at Sheffield; I initially applied because I strongly feel that communities can only thrive through people's cooperation and support.

You will probably get several emails or flyers about volunteering at the university, so it will be very easy to get involved.

Fanni, BA Architecture, Hungary

There were so many opportunities to volunteer I can't even count them. Students in general are very open minded and pro active. So yes if you are interested in volunteering, you will definitely have various options to choose from.
