Rachna Malani

Rachna graduated from The University of Sheffield in 2010 with an MBChB in Medicine

I chose to study at The University of Sheffield because I wanted to try something new. I knew that Sheffield was an excellent school, offered a unique way of teaching my course, and coming here would allow me to experience living in a new country, away from everything I knew. When I was given the chance, I decided to go for it.

I study Medicine here and so far I have to say that I love it! The course is actually a lot different from what I expected. I´m not just in a classroom- we get to work in the hospitals with patients! The course is really hands on and is great at preparing me for my future.

Sheffield as a city is extremely unique. It has the best mix of a small town and a large cosmopolitan city. The city is full of small family owned shops and pubs as well as the large chains a lot of us have come to love like Starbucks!

In my spare time I like to read and listen to music. I´ve also started dabbling in learning how to make different types of coffee. I´m also president of the American Society here at Sheffield so that takes up most of my time!

The most difficult aspect of coming to study here in Sheffield was leaving my family back in the States. The idea of leaving everything I knew behind really scared me at first. But after a while, I learned to make Sheffield my home away from home.

The best piece of advice I can offer is to come here with an open mind. Coming here in the first place can be a scary idea but if you come here with an open mind, ready to meet the challenge, this could turn out to be the best experience of your life!
