Student Life in Sheffield 



Every night, the pubs and clubs of Sheffield vibrate to the sounds of up and coming new bands and star DJs. The larger stadium-style venues here attract many of the biggest stars in the world. Sheffield loves pop, rock and dance music. The University itself is a key venue for touring bands and DJs. Prestigious classical performances by orchestras and groups are also a regular event on campus and in the city.


The Showroom Cinema is the biggest independent cinema outside London and the centre for serious film fans in Sheffield. The programme covers modern, classic and world cinema every week. There are a number of multi-screen cinema complexes in the city, showing all the latest Hollywood blockbusters.  Plus, we even have our own independent cinema conveniently located on campus


Sheffield is a regional powerhouse for drama. Theatre fans love the intimacy of the famous Crucible and its pioneering productions. The magnificent Lyceum has a hugely varied programme, hosting everything from opera and ballet to West End musicals. Smaller productions shine at the Studio, Library Theatre and the cosy, Victorian Lantern Theatre. And our very own University of Sheffield Drama Studio hosts more than 40 productions each year by our students and local community groups.

Eating out

There are restaurants to suit every taste and pocket from Michelin-award winning restaurants to independent cafes designed with a student budget in mind.

Within minutes of the campus you will find food from around the world including Chinese, Indian, Italian, Thai, Spanish, Japanese, Mexican and Lebanese. Vegetarian and Halal food is widely available.


If contemporary art floats your boat, the Site Gallery is a gem – but with Jarvis Cocker as a patron you'd expect no less. And Museums Sheffield offers four great venues. There's the spectacular Millennium Gallery for art, crafts and history. The Graves Gallery's breathtaking collection of visual art spans centuries and continents. Local history is on show at Bishops' House. And next to the University there's Weston Park Museum, mixing natural history with science and local geography. Everywhere's free to get in, of course.


As well as two professional sides in Sheffield Wednesday and United, the city is a hotbed of grassroots football and the birthplace of the modern game. Our Students' Union also has nearly 50 sports clubs tackling everything from fell running to korfball.

Love the outdoors? Half of Sheffield's population livespeaks within 15 minutes' walk of open countryside. Popular student areas like Crookes and Broomhill are within easy reach of the city centre – but turn the other way and you can literally walk out of town and into the Peak District National Park. Cherished by cyclists, campers, climbers and anyone who just likes a nice stroll, the Peak features some of Britain's most spectacular landscapes. The pubs and cafes aren't bad either. Students' Union

In UK universities the Students' Union is the centre of student life. This is where you'll find support services, shops, advice centres and entertainment.

When you become a Sheffield student, you automatically become a member of the Students´ Union. For many of our international students, the Students' Union is what makes their experience so memorable.

Located in the heart of the campus, the shops, cafes and bars are open seven days a week, from breakfast into the night. There are club nights every night of the week attracting big name DJs and bands from around the world. There's also a bank, and even a cinema.

Student societies

The Students' Union supports a wide range of national, cultural and religious societies that are open to all students at Sheffield.


These celebrate the diversity on campus through national and religious holidays and festivals and representation at major events including food and cultural evenings.

They give you the opportunity to learn more about other cultures and campuses as well as enjoying your own during your time with us in Sheffield.

Faith in the City (Places of Worship in Sheffield

The city of Sheffield is blessed with many places of worship. Students and staff of the University make a great contribution to the richness and diversity of the life of the city, and one of the ways in which they do that is by getting involved with a local church, mosque, synagogue or temple.

Sheffield has all the shops you will need, Meadowhall – one of the largest shopping centres in Britain, is just a few minutes from town by bus, tram or train. Division Street is the place for independent shops, with all the vintage and boutique clothing, footwear and accessories anyone could wish for, plus designer clothing.

Meadowhall is easily reached directly from the University of Sheffield supertram stop and the journey takes about 20 minutes.

The Students' Union also has many shops and services for students, including a general shop, bank, coffee shop plus food and drink outlets.
