How did you feel when you heard that you were successful in being awarded the scholarship?
It was an amazing moment, I felt extremely honoured to be awarded this scholarship. I could not hold back my tears of happiness. The long-awaited, life-changing experience was on its way.
What made you choose to study at Sheffield and your course?
Sheffield has a well know reputation for being a quiet, friendly and not too expensive city and the University of Sheffield is a world-class university with very high research output.
I was confident that receiving my MPH degree from the University of Sheffield, which has an excellent programme and an international wide reputation for success and excellence, would enrich my experience, facilitate my career development and greatly increase my contribution to health care development in my home country, Palestine.
What was your initial impression of Sheffield and the University when you first arrived?
When I first arrived, the sunny morning along with the green spaces, clean streets and fresh air made me deeply relaxed to the extent that I felt like I was in paradise.
I went to the University to complete various registrations ventured into the city centre and started exploring the city. I was so happy and impressed, especially when talking to people, in the streets and at the markets. They were all friendly, helpful and supportive. At night, I did feel a little homesick, but this didn’t last long. My life started to become quickly illuminated with new friends, cultures and the spectacular nature of Sheffield.
What are the highlights of your experience in Sheffield so far?
I have met a plethora of students from all over the world and explored different cultures. I love nature and in Sheffield I found more than what I was looking for. I’ve really enjoyed exploring the beautiful green parks and gardens and most of all the famous Peace Gardens and Sheffield Botanical Gardens.
What would you say to a student considering studying at the University of Sheffield?
Studying at Sheffield will open the door to further academic and professional progress. It’s worth leaving your home for a while to gain such a life-changing experience.
Living in Sheffield and studying at the University will offer you both a rich academic and social life. I am sure you will fall in love with Sheffield.
