Why Sheffield?

Sheffield was an obvious choice for me as it offered the best of both worlds: a strong academic and research-led educational reputation as well as a wide range of social activities that I could get involved with through many societies of the Students’ Union. I wanted a holistic undergraduate education and Sheffield has kept its promise on that part. I chose to study Bioengineering because of the interdisciplinary nature of the course and the flexibility it offered. I had also heard a lot about the Careers Service and in my second year, when applying for a Year in Industry, I received a lot of careers support from counsellors and CV experts.

How did you find out about the scholarships on offer?

I found out about scholarships for international students at Sheffield through the University’s website. They have country-specific information such as the scholarships available and how to apply. I also reached out to previous scholars to know more about their experience at Sheffield which encouraged me to apply even more.

How did your scholarship impact your Sheffield experience?

Being an Undergraduate Merit Scholar allowed me to meet other scholarship-holders and connect with them in my first year. This was helpful as I made friends with students across various departments at both undergraduate and postgraduate level from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. In addition to being recognized, having a scholarship was a massive financial backing, making it possible for me to come to University in the UK from India. It played a large motivational role in my studies and career and still does.

What would you say to others unsure of whether to study at Sheffield?

For those unsure of where to go to University, I would definitely recommend Sheffield as your destination, especially if you enjoy a balance between your studies and extra-curricular activities. There are over three hundred societies and committees to get involved with so you’re bound to find something you enjoy and develop your interpersonal skills through committee positions. There is also part-time work available to manage your finances as an international student which the JobShop and Careers Service advertise. Sheffield has a central location making it easy to travel from – the Peak District is also just around the corner for those who enjoy hiking and being outside.
