How did you research the University to find out about studying in Sheffield?

My research process was thorough, I started with a word cloud that included all the key words and phrases that were important to me. Terms such as communication, development, culture, globalisation, project management and more. I was so impressed when the MA in Intercultural Communication and Development ticked off every single one of those boxes and more. I researched other elements too and loved that Sheffield had the number one Students’ Union in the UK. That said a lot to me about inclusion and the student voice. I also looked at the key themes my programme conveners were working on and made a note of parallels or other areas to be explored. I even researched the city itself. The greenery and eco-friendly measures also stood out to me.

What was your initial impression of Sheffield and the University when you first arrived?

During my research, the very first image of Sheffield I saw was a stunning photograph of Firth Court. The sprawling lawns were full of life and colour, the flowers were vibrant hues and the tall buildings stood as a solid backdrop, fusing the hard and soft elements. I made up my mind to one day see this building. The minute I got to Sheffield, I headed to Firth court first and it did not disappoint. Magical may not quite be the word but seeing Firth court in person and knowing I’d be able to see it for most of my programme was surreal for me. I remember thinking how culturally diverse the University was as well. People here are also friendly and polite and it made me even more confident that I had made the right choice.

What are the highlights of your experience in Sheffield so far?

The rain! No really, coming from a super sunny Jamaica, I am yet to get used to the rain making its sudden appearance. The buildings here are also definite stand outs. I’m still exploring but my visit to Peak Point was worth the climb!

It’s amazing how much you can get involved in too, from volunteering, to Ballroom dancing and bee keeping, you name it and Sheffield has it. I also have a great appreciation for the Students’ Union which has been stellar in helping international students to transition into their new life. It really isn’t hard to see why the Sheffield’s SU remains one of the best.

What would you say to a student considering studying at the University of Sheffield?

Give it a go! The diversity here is amazing and so you’ll feel right at home. The facilities are top notch and incorporate modern technology across various areas. It also helps that you are away from the hustle and bustle but still have access to all the modern conveniences of city life. Sure you will have some rain and yes you will even have some colder weather, but students and staff are always keen to help and that is a double dose of warmth.
