What made you choose to study at Sheffield and your course?

In February 2020 I came to Sheffield as a journalism study abroad student. I enjoyed how my professors challenged me to think critically about the role of journalism in society and offered me advice and insight on how to further my career. I loved the convenience of living in the city and the friendly atmosphere it provided.

When I had to return home to the U.S, because of COVID I knew I wanted to come back to earn my master’s degree. I was inspired to continue studying about media in different countries, and decided to apply for the international public and political communication course.

I was a bit skeptical about coming to Sheffield in-person because of COVID, but now I’m so glad I took a chance. It feels like I'm getting the chance to finish a journey I started so long ago.

What are you enjoying about your first semester?

I’ve enjoyed catching up with the professors and friends I made the last time I was in Sheffield as a study abroad student. When I left I wasn’t sure if I would see them again, but now I’m happy I get to meet with them on a weekly basis and get to know them better.

I’ve also enjoyed taking part in the various societies that Sheffield has to offer. I’m currently an active member of Forge Media and the Journalism Society. I also love walking around and seeing different parts of the city and eating different kinds of British foods.

What advice would you give to a student considering studying at the University of Sheffield?

I would advise any student considering studying at Sheffield to do your research on the university - make sure this is the environment you can see yourself living in, this is the course you want to take, and that you are aware and prepared for the mental, financial, etc. costs.

In the end, everyone’s reason for choosing to study at Sheffield is different. I can only say from personal experience that Sheffield is one of those rare universities that offer students a safe and welcoming place to grow and recognise their potential.
