English language preparation programmes
The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) offers fee-paying preparatory courses to students intending to follow an academic course at the University and also provides a range of English language support classes free of charge to students registered at the University.
The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) is accredited by the British Council for the quality of its teaching and services.
Different classes cover all aspects of English language learning and run throughout the academic year.
Whether you want to study English for a few weeks or a year, for academic, general or business purposes, we offer you a structured programme of study, extensive learning resources and enthusiastic and dedicated staff.
Academic English Preparatory Course
This course provides training in English language combined with a variety of academic skills such as oral presentation, academic writing, research and seminar skills.
Students can follow the course for any period from one to nine months. The course consists of 21 study hours per week.
Students registered on this course for more than 12 weeks are entitled to full membership of the University Union of Students and the use of all the other support services of the University.
Pre-sessional Academic English Course
This course is intended for students who are preparing to study at the University of Sheffield or at another British university. It is an intensive Academic English course concentrating on the skills required to study successfully at university.
We now offer 10-week, 6-week and 4-week Pre-sessional courses to help you reach the English language level required for your academic programme at Sheffield.
General English with Options Course
This course is most suitable for students who wish to visit Sheffield and study for a few weeks. The shortest course is 2 weeks, the longest is 8 weeks.
English for partners
The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC), in co-operation with the Union of Students, provides free English language instruction twice a week for the partners of international students who attend the University.
The class will be mixed ability, with an emphasis on improving spoken English. It will be taught by a qualified teacher.
There are also special classes twice a week for the wives and female partners of international students who attend the University.
Qualified female teachers and volunteers will provide classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced level students, with an emphasis on improving spoken English.
A free crèche for children aged between 1 year and 5 years is also provided and run by qualified staff.
