Profile

I began my research career with a PhD in plant ecology from the University of Glasgow.  After a short spell in industry, I worked for a few years on a DFID-funded project, looking at problems controlling cotton pests in South India.  The issues proved to have as much to do with information and education as with science and technology.

Eventually, I came to TUoS to take the MSc in Information Management.  Immediately afterwards, I spent a couple of years setting up and running a learning centre in a London school, then returned to Sheffield, where I spent many years researching aspects of the impact of technology on information behaviour.

At the end of 2016 I had a change of scenery, when I went to work at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, for three years.  I followed that up with some time spent helping to develop low-budget materials for a STEM-education company in India before, once again, coming back to work in at Sheffield iSchool.

Research interests

My interests fall into two areas:

  • The links between evolution and information
  • The impact of technology on information behaviour.
