Profile

I am currently working as a researcher on the Shared Space and Space for Sharing project exploring empathy in online discussion forums for Motor Neurone Disease and Breast Cancer.

Prior to this I worked as a researcher in the Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Group in the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), working on a number of projects focused on ageing, health, and health technologies. In 2014 I completed my PhD entitled A Mixed Methods Exploration of the Relationship between Activities within the Home and Health: Implications for Lifestyle Monitoring. My PhD was funded by Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Prior to this I worked in health information and analysis within the NHS; latterly as a Senior Public Health Analyst at Doncaster Primary Care Trust. I have an Msc in Information Management from the Information School (Sheffield), and MA in Public Health (distinction) from Sheffield Hallam where I was awarded the Applied Social Science Award for Best Overall Performance (2007)

Research interests

My research interests focus on exploring the experiences of everyday life within the context of ill-health, and ageing. I am currently exploring the role of empathy in online forums for health conditions; focusing on how empathy develops, is maintained, or is betrayed within the online space.
