Entry Requirements for PhD/MPhil Study

You will usually require:

  1.  A strong Master's Degree (or be working towards Master's degree at the time of application), with an overall grade of 60% from a UK institution (or equivalent from an overseas university), with a minimum of 60% in a research project/dissertation.

  2. A degree from a University classed as 'majority English speaking' by UK Visas and Immigration. If this is dated more than five years prior to your proposed start date, we may require an up-to-date qualification.
An appropriate English language qualification that meets our minimum entry requirements:

    Overall score 6.5
    Listening 6.0
    Reading 6.0
    Speaking 6.0
    Writing 6.0

Details of other qualifications recognised by the University can be found on the English language requirements webpage. However, please be aware that our entry requirements are above the standard minimum listed on these pages. Please contact us for further information if you have an English language qualification other than IELTS. Please be aware that an IELTS qualification must be obtained no more than 2 years prior to the start date of your programme.

  3. Two academic references that detail your suitability for PhD study. These should be supplied and signed by academic staff at institutions where you have studied previously and be presented on the official letter-headed paper of the relevant institution. If you have been out of education for the last two years, you may supply one academic reference, along with one from your current employer.

International Students

If you are not a UK/EU national, then you may require a student visa to come to the UK to undertake your PhD. You can find full information about this by visiting the University's webpages for International Students.
