The University

Study with us and you'll join the 2011 University of the Year.

The University is a member of the Russell Group of leading research universities which includes Oxford, Cambridge, University College London and Manchester.

We're a modern university with close links to our community and a focus on the wider world. But our degrees pack a punch in terms of high academic standards too. That's why we're rated 10th in the UK and 97th in the world in the prestigious yearly rankings published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Sheffield's a friendly place to learn as well as live. The world's best universities don't have to be stuffy, ivory tower institutions where the top academics seem to live in another world. We're the living proof. We're a community of learning where students and lecturers reach first-name terms pretty quickly. And, more importantly, they're working side by side on the same team.

Our Students' Union is ranked the best in the UK according to the National Student Survey 2012 and the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2013

The Information School is right in the heart of Sheffield within the University's main campus and close to fantastic facilities like the Information Commons.

We have the St George's Library right on our doorstep, and are within just a few minutes' walk of the main Western Bank Library.

For relaxing, we are also right next to St George's churchyard, a peaceful green space (with resident Peregrines). We're also close to the lively West Street and Division Street where there are plenty of shops, cafes and bars, as well as the unique city centre park Devonshire Green, a great place to enjoy the sunshine.
