Using Twitter data to provide insights into infectious disease outbreaks

PhD researcher: Wasim Ahmed

Social networks and social media enable members of the public to share personal experiences, opinions and stories related to infectious diseases. The purpose of this PhD is to conduct an in-depth analysis of tweets related to the Swine Flu outbreak of 2009, and that of the Ebola outbreak of 2014. The study is exploratory and seeks to gain a better understanding of the types of information, and content shared by Twitter users.
