I have been teaching on and off since 1999 and in recent years have developed modules that have strongly reflected my research interests. A good example is my Researching Social Media MA module. This is part of my wider research on social media, and I also frequently give presentations on this work and teaching. I’m completing a textbook for Sage, also called Researching Social Media with computer scientist Mike Thelwall, which is based on our teaching and research in this area. I organized a conference of the same name in November 2013, as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science, and this included an afternoon of training sessions arising from some of this teaching. There is a great need for more training and teaching in this area. The updated module will run in the spring semester and so far has become a very popular choice with students from across the Faculty. As part of the module students will have the opportunity to apply for paid placements to test out some of their new skills, which is aimed at helping them with both their dissertation research and finding employment in this area after completing their degree.
