Set up VPN on Windows

Choose your operating system below and follow the instructions to set up University VPN.

You will need to connect to the VPN every time you want to use a service that requires it. When you are not using services that require University VPN, we recommend that you disconnect from VPN.

Windows 10

To view the video in full screen, click the double arrow icon to the bottom right of the video screen (second from the right).

  1. Click on the Start menu
  2. Go to Settings followed by Network & Internet
  3. Click on VPN followed by Add a VPN connection
  4. Enter the following;
  5. VPN provider: Windows (built-in)
  6. Connection name: UoS
  7. Server name or address:
  8. VPN type: IKEv2
  9. Type of sign-in info: User name and password
  10. Only enter your Username and Remote Access Password if you are confident that your computer is secure and will not be shared with other people. Otherwise leave these fields blank.
  11. Only check the Remember my sign-in info option if you are confident that your computer is secure and will not be shared with other people. Otherwise leave this option blank.
  12. Press Save
  13. Click on Change adapter options
  14. Right Click UoS and select Properties 
  15. Go to the Security tab
  16. Under Data Encryption, ensure Require encryption (disconnect if server declines) is selected 
  17. Under Authentication, ensure Microsoft: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) (encryption enabled) is selected 
  18. Go to the Networking tab
  19. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then select Properties
  20. Select Advanced
  21. Ensure Use default gateway on remote network and Automatic metric are checked
  22. Go to the DNS tab
  23. In the DNS suffix for this connection section, enter
  24. Click OK to save new settings
  25. Click on UoS and select Connect                                                                      
  26. When prompted enter your username and Remote Access Password.
  27. You are now connected to VPN.
Windows 8.1
  1. From the Start screen press the Windows key + W
  2. select Everywhere from the drop down list
  3. Search for, and then select, Control Panel
  4. From the View by drop down list (top right) select small icons
  5. Select Network and Sharing Center
  6. Select Set up a new connection or network
  7. Select Connect to a workplace
  8. Click Next
  9. Select "No, create a new connection"
  10. Click Next
  11. Select Use my Internet connection (VPN)
  12. In the Internet address box enter
  13. In the Destination name box enter UoS VPN
  14. Click Next
  15. To connect to the VPN press the Windows key + W and search for Network
  16. Select Connect to a network
  17. On the Networks bar select UoS VPN then the Connect button
Windows 7 Microsoft ended support for the Windows 7 operating system on January 14th 2020. As of this date Windows 7 is now an unsupported platform to connect to the University of Sheffield VPN service. Please consider upgrading your device to Windows 10
