Jenny top of the league

Sheffield student Jennifer Smith is the top journalism student of 2008. She was named NCTJ Student Journalist of the Year this week and presented with her award at the Society of Editors conference in Bristol by Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger.

Out of 1700 students who took the National Council for the Training of Journalists preliminary exams in news writing, law, public administration and shorthand, 200 achieved the gold standard of passes in every exam.

And out of those 200 Jenny, who completed her MA in Print Journalism (with distinction) in September, came top.

Alan Rusbridger said: I’m delighted to see the NCTJ launch these awards to celebrate the outstanding achievements of talented young journalists. They’ve all done extremely well to be here today, and I look forward to watching their careers progress.”
