Journalism department scores triple success

Shu-Chen Chen with Professor Jackie Harrison

The Department of Journalism Studies celebrated a triple success at the recent graduation ceremony at the Octagon Centre at the University of Sheffield recently.

Alongside more than 70 students receiving Master of Arts degrees and Diplomas, one student was awarded a doctorate and three members of staff were given a Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.

Shu-Chen Chen received her Doctor of Philosophy degree before the assembled audience of graduates, university officers and family and friends on January 15.

Staff members Bill Carmichael, David Holmes and Marie Kinsey were also presented with their Senate Award by Professor Tony Payne, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the faculty of Social Sciences.

They received this for the Election Project – an innovative piece of teaching in which the normal timetable is discarded for a week and replaced by a large multi-media news gathering operation to cover the local elections.

Earlier more than 100 graduates and guests attended a reception where food and drinks were served.

Director of Journalism, Professor Peter Cole, congratulated the graduates and award winners and said the department was rightly proud of the achievements of the past year.
