Michael nominated for Guardian award
Sheffield graduate Michael Smith has been shortlisted for Reporter of the Year in The Guardian's 2011 Student Media Awards.
Michael was nominated for the award after submitting three news stories written for the Students' Union newspaper, Forge Press.
The stories included an investigation into the University of Sheffield's contact with the Gaddafi regime, which resulted in a £400,000 student transfer deal, and the awarding of an honorary doctorate to former British Ambassador to Libya.
He also submitted an investigation into the University's acceptance of £6.5m in funding from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in return for research and consultancy services, and the revelation that the University last year sought to obtain a High Court order permanently banning protests across the entire campus.
Michael graduated with a BA in Journalism Studies in 2010 and a Masters' degree in Politics this year. He now works as Student Media Coordinator at Sheffield Union, helping students to produce Forge Press, Forge Radio and Forge TV.
