Rebecca wins Sunday Times Foreign Correspondent Award
Third-year journalism student Rebecca Cooke has been announced the winner of The Sunday Times 2011 Tom Walker Trust Award for Young Foreign Correspondents.
The competition, which was set up in the name of Times foreign correspondent Tom Walker who died in 2007, aims to help fledgling journalists break into foreign reporting.
Aged 20, Rebecca is the youngest person to have won the award.
Entrants were required to pitch an idea for a foreign story which would then be developed into a published piece if they were successful.
After being shortlisted and going for an interview at The Sunday Times offices in London with foreign news editor Sean Ryan, Rebecca won the competition with her story idea about Ukrainian surrogacy laws.
She will receive prize money of £1000, a four week internship on the foreign desk at The Sunday Times and the opportunity to do a foreign assignment in Ukraine.
Rebecca said: “I’m thrilled to have won and consider myself very lucky. I can’t wait to start my internship and hope this will help me in achieving my ultimate ambition of becoming a foreign correspondent.”
Rebecca is due to start her internship in December and will be sent on her foreign assignment within the coming months.
