Michael completed the postgraduate print journalism course last summer and is now on the staff of the Independent where he works on the comment and opinion desk.

His prize was awarded on Monday at the annual Cudlipp lecture at the London College of Communication, given by former Downing Street press secretary Alastair Campbell.

Michael’s entry was a feature on a Britain's first mosque established in Liverpool in 1889 by William Quilliam, a convert to Islam.

Lady Cudlipp, widow of the late Hugh Cudlipp, who led the Daily Mirror through its most successful period, praised Michael’s piece and presented him with a cheque for £1,000.
