Pupils get a taste of broadcast journalism
Broadcast journalism lecturer and former ITV Calendar News presenter Katie Stewart has invited Year 10 pupils to create an Olympic-themed TV news bulletin. The journalism taster was all part of an outreach project for local school pupils who do not have a family history of attending university.
The Discover Us Student Experience Summer School saw over 100 young people from Rotherham, Sheffield and Wakefield engage in sporting activites and learn study skills. Current journalism students Rachael Pearson and Harriet Evans mentored the young people.
The youngsters were given a crash course in filming, editing and interviewing. They went out to do vox-pops and interviews based on the Olympics. They then presented their programme from the TV studio here in the University of Sheffield's Department of Journalism Studies.
Katie said the response from her young guests was great: "They found the university experience quite an eye-opener and they loved getting hands-on experience in television journalism. They picked up the skills quite quickly and some were even writing their own scripts to broadcast on air.
"Hopefully the taster will enourage some of them to seriously consider applying for a place here in a few years' time."
