Daniella scoops inaugural magazine scholarship

Two of the UK's biggest magazine publishers have granted their first prestigious scholarship to a Sheffield student after working with the Department of Journalism Studies to set up the award.

Daniella Scott has received the inaugural scholarship from Time Inc UK and Bauer Media UK after being accepted to study MA Magazine Journalism at the University of Sheffield.

The scholarship was established in memory of the journalist Gavin Reeve-Daniels, who worked for both publishers and died of pancreatic cancer in September 2014. It covers the course fees and provides two weeks' work experience at both publishers, an iPad, and expenses.

Applicants for the award were asked to write a 750-word article or make a three-minute video on the theme "Life moves pretty fast – if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it".

Daniella's piece – which focused on her grandmother and learning the value of life – was praised by the judging panel for its wit, emotional impact, and deft storytelling. The panel included editors from Time and Bauer, Gavin's widow Leesa Reeve-Daniels, and Yvonne Illsley of the Department of Journalism Studies.

Daniella described the scholarship as an "incredible opportunity" and said she was "utterly ecstatic" to have won the award.

Astounding impact

"She added: "The scholarship will give me invaluable experiences and resources for which I am so grateful. I am excited to learn and determined to work diligently towards a career in journalism, and this scholarship will give me an opportunity to do this with such incredible support.

The scholarship is such a generous and gracious way to commemorate Gavin, who clearly had an astounding impact on the people he worked with and within the industry, and I am so pleased and so thankful to be given the chance to do justice to such an opportunity as this."

Yvonne, the MA Magazine Journalism course leader, said: "Daniella's entry was heart-warming and funny, so it is fitting that she won. This is an incredibly prestigious scholarship, and we are very proud that it is only available to students studying for an MA in Magazine Journalism at Sheffield.

"We work closely with publishers and have an excellent track record at winning major awards, but this really shows how much the industry trusts us to shape and nurture new talent."

The Gavin Reeve-Daniels Scholarship will be awarded annually from 2015 to a UK resident student accepted to study Sheffield's masters in magazine journalism.

Marcus Rich, CEO of Time Inc UK, said: "I was fortunate enough to work with Gavin. He was a brilliant journalist and designer with an instinct for a great story. At one point when he was an editor and I was his publisher, the care and attention he paid to every member of his team, making sure they laughed, and were happy, and did their best work was second to none. He inspired people at Time Inc UK and we are glad we can honour him with this scholarship."
