Mat has been teaching in the department since September 2002, sharing his knowledge of editing and camera work with both postgraduate and undergraduate students.

He holds a BSc from the University of Manchester and an MA in documentary film and television from Sheffield Hallam University. His career in journalism started in 1988 when he joined BBC news and current affairs as a trainee editor. Matt quickly became an editor, working on BBC news output from Breakfast News to Newsnight.

After moving to Sheffield he continued to work for the BBC as a camera person and editor on local and national news programmes until 2002. Since then, as well as teaching in the department, he has been a freelance filmmaker, producing films for a wide range of companies and charities. In 2014 he joined the Department of Journalism Studies full time.
