Our courses

With more landscape architecture courses on offer than any institution in the UK, we are able to provide students with an unprecedented choice in their study. Our diverse mix of taught and research courses span arts, social sciences, geography and ecology.

Our undergraduate courses are unique in combining a broad training in landscape architecture with specialist modules in ecology and planning. We also offer – in conjunction with the School of Architecture – the only fully accredited dual degree in Architecture and Landscape in the UK.

Our taught postgraduate courses enable students to pursue careers as chartered Landscape Architects and Managers, while our PhD programmes are ideal for students who wish to pursue an academic, research or teaching career.

Accreditation

Our courses are designed to meet the needs of the profession and prepare students for landscape architecture practice. All of our undergraduate degrees are fully accredited by the Landscape Institute and the International Federation of Landscape Architects. We also offer the only Landscape Institute-accredited management masters in the UK.

Your learning

We pride ourselves on our innovative approaches to learning and teaching and our students learn in a variety of ways, designed to accommodate different styles.

In-studio

The studio is the heart of learning and is where students participate in workshops, small group seminars, tutorials and project reviews. Our studios provide a stimulating environment in which students come together, share ideas and enrich each other’s learning. Studio learning is supported by lectures, which play a vital role in developing knowledge in landscape theory and practice.

On-site

Learning in situ is integral to the study of landscape architecture. We make the most of our central location to introduce students to a range of Landscape Architecture projects around the UK. There are opportunities for international travel within modules and through our global exchange programme.

Outside the tower

Students gain experience working alongside those they will work with in practice - from friends associations to fellow professionals. With Department-led projects like Grey-to-Green changing the face of Sheffield, students have the chance to get involved with ‘live’ projects and see the difference landscape architecture can make.

Led by research

Our teaching is driven by discoveries made through our world-leading research. We are proud to have come 3rd nationally in the REF 2021 in terms of the quality of our research; with 95 per cent of our research and impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

Our high-quality research is pushing the boundaries of knowledge and making a difference to people’s lives. We aim to develop graduates who can deliver these ideas into practice.

Reflective

Our staff work alongside students to support them explore and test ideas. Landscape architecture is a challenging discipline and requires a commitment to engage in self-directed projects, reflect on ideas and carry out independent research.

Visual creativity, expression and problem-solving

At Sheffield we believe that places should be designed well. We place a strong emphasis on developing skills of visual creativity, expression and problem-solving. However, we also believe that in order to be successful, landscapes needs to work socially, economically, culturally and environmentally. By equipping students with the skills to understand the complexity of landscapes, Sheffield graduates learn how to produce solutions that are sustainable.
