Postgraduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching

The Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CiLT) is the University´s initial professional development programme for academic staff on probation. The course is specifically designed to meet both the needs of staff new to higher education teaching and new to the research-led environment of Sheffield University. It supports both government checking and publishing mechanisms and student requests that HE academic and teaching staff receive accredited training in learning and teaching.

Successful completion of the course will lead to the award of a Masters-level Certificate by the School of Education (60 M-level credits). It is designed to be studied part-time over two years, and will combine both face-to-face tuition with dedicated MOLE activities as well as a series of peer review, teaching observations and self-chosen professional development activities. The course seeks to enable the exploration of generic principles in learning and teaching with considered reflection upon the application of these principles within a discipline-specific environment.

In 2005/2006 CiLT was formally accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and then again in 2009. As such, the course has been recognized as meeting national standards in learning and teaching in higher education and graduates are automatically entitled to join the HEA's list of registered practitioners. From September 2014 CiLT is one of the pathways to recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) under the University's new Learning and Teaching Professional Recognition Scheme (LTPRS) which is accredited by the HEA.

CiLT is divided into two modules. Each module usually takes one year to complete and module 1 must be successfully completed before progressing to module 2. The modules are delivered by face-to-face workshop blocks and through online and face-to-face activities.  Participants will be required to commence the pre-attendance preparation one month before the start of the Workshop Week.

The remaining delivery dates for 2016/17 are:

Module 1 — Effective Learning and Teaching Environments (please note attendance at all sessions in the workshop block is mandatory, attendance is required on one block only)
