Inclusive Learning and Teaching

  • To create a University of Sheffield learning culture which enables all our students, from whatever background, to achieve their full potential.


  • To provide academic and support staff with the skills necessary to ensure that the delivery of the curriculum reaches across the diversity of the entire student community
  • To provide students with the means of assessing the factors inhibiting their full access to learning resources
  • To provide the forum by which staff and students can assess the effectiveness of learning and teaching strategies
  • To contribute to the development of the University’s place at the forefront of educational developments


The Inclusive Learning and Teaching Project ran from November 2007 to July 2010. The key outputs are:

  • A handbook of best practice for the use of all teaching staff
  • Eleven department-based case studies
  • This website, to support staff and students in assessing the effectiveness of the inclusive learning and teaching environment in the university
  • A series of ‘lessons learnt’ from the development of the project formulated as Hints and Tips for an Inclusive Educational Environment
  • A contribution to the development of a Students’ Charter now known as 'Our Commitment'
  • A video. We invited students to a session in and asked them to tell us things that were barriers to their inclusion in learning. They identified some key areas for action which you can see in the video.

What is Inclusive Learning and Teaching?

What it is:

  • Creating and presenting opportunities for learning in such a way that they are accessible to all students
  • Making what we teach and the way we teach it much more flexible
  • Taking into consideration different learning styles
  • Using course content to teach about diversity issues

What it isn't:

  • Making radical changes to a course
  • Only for some subject disciplines
  • Just for under-represented groups
  • Something additional to core work
