Jian Kang has been Professor of Acoustics (now as Visiting Professor) at The University of Sheffield School of Architecture since 2003.

Previously, he also worked at the University of Cambridge, the Fraunhofer Institute of Building Physics in Germany and Tsinghua University in China.

He has worked in environmental and architectural acoustics for over 30 years, writing over 800 publications and working on scores of research and engineering consultancy projects.

His work on acoustic theories, design guidance and products has brought major improvements to the noise control in underground stations and tunnels and soundscape design in urban areas.

Over the past two decades there have been many major new developments in the field of urban sound environment.

Jian Kang introduces and examines these key developments, including the development of prediction methods for urban sound propagation, establishment and application of noise-mapping software, new noise control measures and design methods.

Urban Sound Environments is an essential text for students and practitioners in a wide range of fields, from urban planning and landscape through to architecture and acoustics.
