The Map Collection
The University Library´s map collection is located on Level 4 of the Western Bank Library.
It comprises a good collection of British maps. The whole country is covered at a scale of 1:25,000 and 1:50,000. Larger scale maps are available for local areas (North Derbyshire, South Yorkshire) at a scale of 1:2,500 and 1:10,000. Maps at a scale of 1:500 and 1:1,250 are available for the Sheffield area only. There is a wide range of historical maps (mainly 1850´s onward). There are also geology maps for England, Scotland and Wales at a scale 1:50,000.
There is a small collection of foreign maps used for teaching and research.
The Library stocks a good range of atlases and gazetteers which can be used in conjunction with the maps.
The collection is reference only and photocopying facilities are available (subject to copyright). Please fill in a map request form, which can be found on the map chests and post it in the box provided or complete the Online map request form , allowing 24 hours notice. Maps will be available by 10:30 Monday to Friday.
There is no interlibrary loan service for maps. Details of map collections elsewhere in the country can be found here
There is no other sizeable general collection of maps in the Sheffield area, although Sheffield City Library has a good collection of local maps in the Local Studies section.
The Library has access to the Digimap on-line mapping facility.

The collection: a brief outline of what we hold
1:500 (approximately 10 foot to 1 mile). Cover Sheffield only
These maps were published in the 1880s and 1890s and are extremely detailed.
1:1056 (5 feet to one mile). Cover Sheffield only
These maps were published in 1853 in 36 sheets. They are very detailed but only covers what is today central Sheffield not the suburbs as do the 1:500 maps above.
1:1250. Cover Sheffield only
1:2500 (1 cm to 25 metres or 25" to 1 mile). County series
The sheets we hold cover Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire between 1892 and 1935
1:10,000 (1 cm to 100 metres or 6" to 1 mile)
We have various dates from 1970 onwards but again coverage is restricted to Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
1:10,560 (6 inch). County series
This is an alternative scale to the 1:2500 and provides coverage from 1850 to the 1950s.
1:25,000 (4 cm to 1 kilometre or 2 ½" to a mile). Explorer, Outdoor leisure
1:50,000 (2 cm to one kilometre or 1 ¼" to one mile). Landranger (1st & 2nd series)
These maps cover the whole of Britain.
Ordnance Survey one inch series (1:63,360 or 1" to 1 mile)
These maps cover the whole of the country but our collection is incomplete.

Other maps of Sheffield, Yorkshire & Derbyshire
There are a number of Sheffield facsimiles dated 1771, 1795 and 1832. The map collection has copies of some original engravings of early maps dating from the 17th century of Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
One inch soils & land use capability
There are only a few sheets available and nothing for Sheffield (area was not surveyed).
British Geological Survey: England and Wales 1:50,000; Scotland 1:50,000 and 1:63,000.
Also, 6 inch Ordnance survey maps surveyed 1872-1873 for Yorkshire and Derbyshire (incomplete)

These are detailed maps of the various shops and other buildings in city centres. Sheffield and Meadowhall maps have been updated at various intervals.
