We offer open and closed short courses (typically 1-3 days) across a range of subject areas including finance for non-financial managers, organisation development, predictive analytics, creativity and leadership.

Undergraduate students in a seminar room

We welcome registrations from both individuals and groups from organisations. Customised short courses can also be co-designed with organisations to ensure your specific development and learning needs are achieved.

We recognise that delegates will bring their own rich experiences and previous learning to our short courses and we give space for delegates to connect with these and use them to help make sense of learning with us. Introduction to Organisation Development

This course will give you an overview of Organisation Development (OD) theory and practice. The case will be made for its importance in achieving sustainable performance improvement. With research-into-practice underpinning example case-studies throughout the course you will gain a good understanding of the key principles of OD. You will also have opportunities to apply OD to your own organisational and role context. Knowledge about emerging developments in the field of OD will ensure that you leave feeling equipped to share your learning with colleagues and able to assess the benefits of OD for your organisation and professional practice.

This course has been designed for anyone who has a role in enabling people in organisations to deliver their very best, both individually and collectively. You may have a Human Resources or internal/external consulting background. Alternatively, you may be a manager or leader with responsibilities for sustainable improvement in challenging circumstances. Whatever your formal role, this course will add to your professional tool-kit in a way that strengthens the impact of your work and the improvement efforts of your colleagues. No pre-requisite expertise is required for this course.

Financial Management for non-specialists

This course will empower you to use financial management tools to make better decisions and become an even greater asset to your organisation. Many managers, executives, and entrepreneurs ascend to positions of great responsibility with less knowledge of financial management than they desire to run a successful, sustainable business. This course delivers an expertly designed overview of the crucial concepts and tools of modern financial management. This course will equip delegates with tools and skills that are immediately applicable in any organisation.

Our course is aimed at mid to senior level managers, executives, and entrepreneurs who are non-finance specialists. This includes managers, executives, and entrepreneurs in all functional areas, including but not restricted to general management, corporate strategy and planning, marketing and sales, research and development, and operations. The course develops the skills of course delegates within a broad range of organisations; from start-ups through small and medium sized businesses, and multinational companies. No prerequisite knowledge in financial management is required.

CLEAR IDEAS for Creativity and Innovation

Organisations are facing increasing pressures to continually innovate in order to survive and thrive in the 21st Century. But how do you keep coming up with truly original new ideas? How do you choose which ideas to take forward? What levers can you use to make sure your new services, activities or processes are successfully realised? This course draws together extensive research and practical experience to provide participants with a simple, systematic process for both creatively generating and implementing solutions to challenges at work.

CLEAR IDEAS is based on the work of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Centre for Organisation and Innovation (COI) based at the University of Sheffield. During its 10-year history, COI researchers studied hundreds of private and public sector organisations to identify the major barriers and facilitators of innovative solutions. The CLEAR IDEAS model was created by COI Researcher Dr Kamal Birdi in 2005 as a way of transferring our research findings into practice. Evidence shows that the approach significantly improves the innovation competencies of our delegates and can really help improve organisational outcomes and enhance value for money in service provision. During the course, delegates will be introduced to a range of tools and techniques for analysing opportunities and generating highly creative solutions, with guidelines on how to effectively implement those innovative approaches in the workplace. It will involve small groups of delegates learning how to use the model on important work-related problems they have already identified in advance.

The competitive pressure to organisations of all sizes to produce timely, accurate and actionable Business Intelligence (BI) insights is greater than ever. Decision making is a critical function in any organisation. The quality of decision making process has a significant impact towards the success or failure of the business. Decisions, which are based on knowledge and evidence, have much higher chance of delivering the business goals. The demand for data analytical skills grows exponentially and nowadays organisations are increasingly forced to deal with multiple streams of Big Data. This course is designed to enable delegates to realise the value of discovering BI patterns ahead of their competition through a variety of cutting edge methods.

This course has been designed for anyone who wants to improve the quality of decision making in their business function through the power of predictive analytics. Most organisations have multiple streams of internal and external data yet they do very little to harvest the value from them.
