HUIPING XIAN, PhD, is a lecturer in Work, Employment, People and Organisation Division at the University of Sheffield Management School. She received her doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. Currently, Huiping is Programme Directors of both BA Business Management (with Sino British College) and MSc Human Resource Management.
Prior to joining Sheffield, she worked in Bournemouth University as a Lecturer in the HR/OB division. Previously Huiping also lectured in Manchester Metropolitan University.
Huiping acknowledges that every student has a different learning style and has used various techniques to facilitate in lectures and tutorials. For example, she often uses videos to demonstrate certain points from the theories. She also introduces case studies from famous companies so that students experience real-life business scenarios. Moreover, she encourages students to use academic theories they learn in class to analyse their own organisations and identify areas for improvement.
Huiping is committed to equal opportunity and diversity. She has been working in a multicultural environment for many years and met students from many different countries. She is keen to offer practical help to them and uses her personal experience to motivate them to adapt to the new environment.
Her research interests include women's careers, HRM issues in Chinese organisations, qualitative research methods, cross-cultural research and translation issues in international research. Her current projects include ‘Developing Women’s Careers in Japan’ which is funded by the British Academy.
Currently, Huiping is supervising a PhD project, which looks into female knowledge workers' flexible work and career development. She is interested in supervising in the following topics:
- Management Issues in China
- Qualitative Methods
- Cross-cultural Research
- Gender Studies
