The School has its own Employability Hub on site which is for the exclusive use of our students. The Hub is a dedicated space where students can access careers support, a broad range of job and placement vacancies, and attend skills and employer workshops.

Graduate employers regularly visit the Employability Hub to hold sessions with our students. Recent organisations to visit include Deloitte, PwC, BT, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, Ernst and Young, IMB and Rolls Royce.

The Hub benefits our students throughout their time at university, whether they're seeking student jobs or placements, or preparing for their graduate careers.

Liam Hulmes postgraduate student at Sheffield University Management School

The Employability Hub is a great resource and it has provided me with invaluable support throughout my degree.

The Hub offers students a chance to brush up on their interview, assessment centre and CV skills. Their staff also support students to find placements during their studies, and employment after graduating.

To make the most of your time here as a postgraduate student, I’d strongly recommend using the service to practice your interview skills and seek out the best opportunities for you.

Employability in our curriculum

You will have many opportunities during your course to engage in personal and professional development.

Many of our courses offer the opportunity to undertake a company project as part of your dissertation. This provides you with valuable work experience, as you will work on on an existing problem within an actual organisation. You can work on these either in a group or as an individual.

Our programmes are designed to enable you to acquire the transferable skills for your future, including:

  • communication and organisation
  • the ability to deal with complex issues creatively and systematically
  • project management and problem solving skills

When I was researching the masters here, the idea of gaining practical exposure through a company project dissertation is what sold it for me.

The company project is an opportunity to get real-world experience.

The Employability Hub can also support you with finding paid placements under the Postgraduate Advantage Scheme (PAS).

Placement opportunities

Through the Postgraduate Advantage Scheme (PAS), students have the opportunity to secure a paid placement during their studies.

The placements provide a £1,000 bursary for 100 hours of work and there are three application windows during each academic year.

You can apply for an existing placement opportunity advertised by the University, or approach a company to initiate your own placement.

Placements prepare you for your future by equipping you with relevant skills for employment. Demonstrable work experience will help you to stand out in the competitive graduate jobs market.
