BMS6007: Mass Spectrometry-based Proteomics and Metabolomics Course

Course summary

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics are powerful approaches to investigate biological problems in an unbiased and quantitative manner. In recent years, rapid technological developments have allowed unprecedented insights into protein function and has made proteomics an essential tool for many areas of biological and medical research. The field of proteomics spans a wide range of molecular complexity from protein synthesis and degradation, protein interactions and protein complexes to a variety of post-translational modifications. Metabolomics, the systematic study of the diverse range of small molecule products of the proteome is driven by a number of mass spectrometry approaches and has many applications from plants to the clinic.

This course aims to provide an introduction to mass spectrometry, proteomics and metabolomics and will explore how these technologies can be used to quantitatively dissect protein-protein interactions, characterise post-translational modifications and profile metabolomes and proteomes.

Topics will include the following:
• Introduction to Mass Spectrometry
• Quantitative proteomics and proteome profiling
• Protein-protein interactions and multiprotein complexes
• Post-translational modifications
• Mass spectrometry informatics/ Computational proteomics
• Targeted Metabolomics
• Non-targeted Metabolomics
• Metabolite imaging Mass Spectrometry
• Tour of the Faculty of Science Mass Spectrometry Centre

PhD students taking this DDP module must attend all sessions in order to complete the course.

FoS Mass Spectrometry Centre Open Day

Event summary

Open day 2018

We are very pleased to announce the Inagural Open Day of the FoS Mass Spectrometry Centre, which will be held on the 25th May 2018. This unique event will comprise of exciting tours, talks and competitions, including:

  • Guided tours and an overview of our facilities and how to work with us.
  • Research talks from our users providing examples of how mass spectrometry is used to enhance their research in different scientific fields.
  • Industry talks by New England Biolabs and Waters giving an exciting overview of state of the art techniques for both sample preparation and mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Perkin Elmer will demonstrate how to use a portable GC-MS device for the analysis of volatile compounds in any research field location.
  • A mass spectrometry voucher competition, giving the opportunity for shortlisted applicants to present their research proposals to win free mass spectrometry instrument time. For more information, download the guidance notes and the application form.
  • An introduction to the Sheffield Bioinformatics Core Facility to discover how they can help you in the downstream bioinformatic analysis of metabolomics and proteomics data acquired in our facilities.
  • Freebies and refreshments will be provided, including a drinks reception and nibbles at the end of the event.
