We have a world champion and world record holder in our midst
No sooner had she finished her finals, final-year Materials Science and Engineering student Cherry Yeung jetted off to Helsingborg in Sweden to compete in the 7th World Women's Classic Powerlifting Championships.
Cherry competes in the under 43kg Junior class, and this was her first international competition, and her fourth competition ever, having recently been called up to the TeamGB squad.
And on this first international outing in TeamGB colours, Cherry only went and took the World Title with a 6kg all-time personal best deadlift of 146kg (which, by the way, is a World Junior Record), a bench press of 62.5kg and a squat of 105kg, giving a grand total of 313.5kg (which, by the way, is another World Junior Record).
An incredible achievement, we’re sure you’ll agree.
What next for Cherry? The under 47kg class, of course, and hopefully some more titles.
