Deep borehole disposal research awarded George Stephenson Medal

Dr Karl Travis and Prof Fergus Gibb at the ICE Awards

Professor Fergus Gibb and Dr Karl Travis, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and John Deswick, Director of the Marriott Drilling Group, have been awarded the George Stephenson Medal for their paper on ‘Deep borehole disposal of nuclear waste: engineering challenges’.

Attending the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Publishing awards in London on Friday 9 October, the group were presented with the award by Professor David Balmforth, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The paper, published in 'Energy' and available via the ICE Virtual Library is cited as:

'A very good paper on a contentious subject, which re-introduces a concept to the industry by presenting a good technical argument. Overall, a comprehensive paper that pushes the boundaries.'
