National Recognition for Student Employees
Two exceptionally talented students Dhilan Devadasan (Materials Science and Engineering) and Máté Lukács (Mechanical Engineering) from The University of Sheffield have won The Student Employee of the Year national award for Off Campus Commercial Impact.
Before the national round in Cardiff they were judged at institutional level - winning their category and going through to the North East regional rounds. At regional level Dhilan and Máté were again judged against many other outstanding part time student workers.
The national awards were announced at a fabulous National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES) awards evening on Thursday 5th July, held at The Jury’s Inn Cardiff. Máté and Dhilan were delighted to be recognised for their commitment to their work with this national award. They said:
"It has been great to have our work improve the products and manufacturing processes at Ossila. We have already seen the fruits of our labour in reduced customer lead times, improved quality of products and order fulfilment capacity."

The award recognises their specialist part time work for an SME in Sheffield - Ossila Ltd. Ossila specialise in developing products to enable quicker and smarter research. Máté and Dhilan were both part-time student Manufacturing Engineers at Ossila, now full-time during the summer. Since they both started working there a few years ago they have created time saving processes to speed up the assembly time of the products. Thus, saving the company vital manufacturing time and ensuring that customers' orders are fulfilled. Whilst working at Ossila, Máté and Dhilan have both been studying at The University of Sheffield. Máté will soon be entering his final year of study and a Dhilan has secured further study. In the meantime both continue to work at Ossila Ltd. Máté and Dhilan were nominated for the Student Employee of the Year award by their employer, Ossila said:
"Everyone at Ossila has always been overwhelmingly impressed with Dhilan & Máté's diligence & conscientious work ethic. To see their hard work being given recognition at a national level is an extremely proud moment for us, and we are fully confident that they will continue to achieve great things after graduation."
Dhilan and Máté are two of the many students that work part-time whilst studying. According to a survey conducted by Endsleigh (2015) eight out of ten (77%) students are now working part-time to help fund their studies.
Also from The University of Sheffield is first year International student Chee Hui Tai who works part time for Homely Apartments in Sheffield. Chee Hui was also a North East regional winner in the ‘Off Campus Above and Beyond’ category and was through to the national round of the awards. Chee Hui Tai received a national ‘Highly Commended’ award in recognition of his work.
The University of Sheffield Careers Service would like to congratulate Dhilan, Máté and Chee Hui for their achievements. The Student Employee of the Year awards are held annually, employers are invited to nominate their student workers and students can also nominate their employers for an employer award.
