Life cycle analysisLifecycle analysis and Lifecycle Energy Analysis (LCEA) considers emissions discharged into the atmosphere due to the use of materials from ‘cradle to grave’ (i.e. from the extraction of raw material through to manufacturing and processing, transportation, end use, disposal and end of life scenarios).

Utilising advances and current trends in materials engineering and manufacturing, the entire substitution and sustainability programme will be informed by SCENAT, a state-of-the-art methodology in carbon accounting which incorporates a Hybrid LCA methodology to substitute rare earth and toxic elements for sustainable alternatives.

The example below shows key metrics for recent hybrid LCEA analysis of new solar cell technology, expected to be commercialised in the next few years. The new solar cells are based on an inorganic-organic perovskite-structured compound, methyl ammonium lead iodide (MALI). The study below highlights the impact on climate change material usage and energy consumption and also estimates the important economic metric of estimated payback period.
