Joel joined the department in 2005 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate developing group interaction modelling of polymers and polymer composites and has since been promoted to university teacher. Previously he worked on conducting polymers at the University of Durham and on polymer modelling at ICI. He obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the University of York (1994) and a PhD in computational chemistry from the University of Cardiff (1997).

  • High throughput modelling of polymers: ‘Polymer Discovery’
  • Experimental manufacture and testing of polymers and polymer composites
  • Predicting and measuring fracture toughness of polymers and polymer composites
  • Predicting and measuring the effect diluents (e.g. water) have on polymer and polymer composite properties
  • Developing new particulate reinforced composites based on recycled materials.
