Open Days for prospective students

Discover Materials at Sheffield

Come and say hello!

We know how important it is when making the decision to take up undergraduate study and that a tour of our facilities as well as speaking with staff and students is just as important as the course itself.

You can get a feel for what we're all about by paying us a visit on one of our many open days.

Student Experience 2014When you study with us you get one of the best student experiences in the UK – and that's according to the people who matter most, our students.

The University of Sheffield is in the top three nationally for offering the best student experience, as voted for by students in the 2016 Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

Register interest  and we will email you when our next webinar is running.

Departmental Open Days

If you apply for one of our courses, we'll invite you to a Departmental Open Day. This is a great chance to get to know our department better, meet some of our staff and current students, and ask any questions you might have.

What you'll see

During the open day we will show you around the Department – the campus, teaching labs and our award-winning Students' Union. You will also be able to take a tour of our state-of-the-art facilities, with trained staff on hand to demonstrate, you will see first hand Materials Science in practice such as sand casting, glass melting, nylon thread production and even chocolate breaking.

You'll gain an insight into just some of the equipment you will be using once you begin your studies, right from the first year, plus you will see what it's like to work in a real-life working lab.

Informal interview

The visit includes an informal interview with a member of our academic staff. You don't need to prepare for this, bring anything with you or dress smartly. It's a chance for us to learn more about you and your interests in engineering. We'll also ask you to talk us through some simple questions about the properties and uses of materials, so that we can assess your powers of reasoning and how well you can apply your existing knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

If you'd like to know more about our Department Open Days, please email Undergraduate Student Support Officer Louise Mason.
